Sequoyah County Overview
Sequoyah County Court Records
The Oklahoma State Courts Network, known as OSCN, provides free public access to Sequoyah County court records. You can search cases by name, case number, or filing date. The system covers civil, criminal, family, and probate cases filed in the Sequoyah County District Court. Most records go back many years and are easy to pull up from any device with internet access.
Case types in Sequoyah County follow the standard Oklahoma format. CF cases are felony criminal matters. CM cases are misdemeanors. CJ covers civil suits. FD is the prefix for family law cases, including divorce and custody. PB handles probate matters. TR is for traffic violations. Knowing the right prefix can speed up a search if someone has multiple cases on file. It also helps when requesting copies from the court clerk.

Sequoyah County is named for the Cherokee scholar who created the Cherokee syllabary, and the county's land records go back to 1956. If you need certified copies or documents from older files, contact the District Court Clerk in Sallisaw. The clerk's office is at 120 E. Chickasaw, Sallisaw, OK 74955. The phone number is (918) 775-4516 and hours run from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on weekdays. Copy fees follow the standard Oklahoma schedule of $1.00 for the first page and $0.50 per page after that.
You can also search Sequoyah County cases through On Demand Court Records (ODCR). ODCR lets you purchase document images directly and covers many Oklahoma counties. Criminal History Records in Sequoyah County
The Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation manages statewide criminal history records through a system called CHIRP. The full name is Criminal History Internet Research Portal, and you can access it at chirp.osbi.ok.gov. A name-based search costs $15.00 and pulls results from across the state, including cases from Sequoyah County. Results come back quickly and cover a wide range of offense types.
CHIRP is useful when you want to look beyond a single county's records. It gives you a broader view of someone's history without having to search multiple local systems. Keep in mind that expunged records do not appear in CHIRP results. If a case was sealed or expunged by court order, it will not show up. For current case status in Sequoyah County specifically, OSCN remains the most direct tool to use.
Oklahoma Open Records Act
Oklahoma's Open Records Act is codified at Title 51 O.S. sections 24A.1 through 24A.33. This law gives any member of the public the right to inspect and copy records held by government agencies in the state. Sequoyah County offices, courts, and agencies must all follow this law. You do not need to explain why you want a record. No reason is required, and you do not have to show any special interest or connection to the subject.
Government agencies are required to respond to public records requests promptly. Most county offices will help you the same day or within a few business days. Copy fees are capped at $0.25 per page for standard documents. There are some exceptions. Certain personnel files, open law enforcement investigations, and records protected by other statutes are exempt from public disclosure. But the general rule is that government records are open, and access is the default position under Oklahoma law.
To make a request from a Sequoyah County office, you can go in person, call by phone, or send a written request by mail. A written request creates a record of what you asked for and when. That can help if a response is delayed. You do not need a specific form. A simple letter or email stating what records you need is enough to start the process.
If your request is denied, the Open Records Act gives you the right to appeal that decision. You can seek review in the district court if an agency refuses to provide records without a lawful reason.
